Bishnupur, the temple city of Bengal!

Image
Bishnupur Terracotta temple I have been to Bishnupur a couple of times before and each time I have marveled at the beautiful terracotta temples. Bishnupur is best known for its beautiful terracotta temples, baluchari sarees, and a slightly lesser known but quite popular snake festival that happens in August. The baluchari sarees are hand woven and have exquisite work depicting scenes from epics like Mahabharata. If you like temple architecture, Bishnupur should most certainly be in your list of to dos. Bishnupur owes its temples to the The Malla rulers who were Vaishnavs. The terracotta temples were built under their supervision in the 17th and 18th century. Getting to Bishnupur is fairly simple. If you are planning a trip to Kolkata, Bishnupur is certainly doable, it takes around 4-5 hours by road to reach Bishnupur (It is in the Bankura district of West Bengal) It is best to have your own transport since it is easier to see all the temples in and around Bishnupur if you ha...

Happy Independence day!

Image
Mustard field Happy Independence day! This independence day I thought I would share some random pictures of nature. These are pictures from our many trips in and around Kolkata. I feel a sense of  complete freedom whenever I am close to nature. It feels wonderfully peaceful and therapeutic. I feel completely free of worries... The beauty never ceases to amaze me and, more importantly, the thought that no one quite owns this beauty. We are all free to own it, it is ours to experience any time we wish to. It is indeed exhilarating. Sunderbans Birds West Bengal Found this cute couple on the way to Sunderbans Birds in Sunderbans, West Bengal White breasted Kingfisher West Bengal

Kolkata Skyline (from Race Course) I am sharing some random pictures of Kolkata that I had taken some time back. Kolkata, which is over three hundred years old, is home to some very old and beautiful heritage buildings. Kolkata has several places of interest, tourists have a lot of  places that they can visit. Some of the most famous tourist attractions in Kolkata are Victoria Memorial, Howrah bridge, Marble Palace,Race Course,Raj Bhavan, Indian Museum, Botanical gardens, Dakhineshwar, Kalighat and many more. Even though this city of joy is one of the most populous cities in India, it still has restored some of its old world charm, and remains the cultural hub for Eastern India. Nazirpur, Malda, West Bengal - A trip to my Ancestral home -Part II

Image
How green is my village! We were invited for lunch to one of my dad's cousin's place, they live very close by. The food was yummy. There was kalai dal, postor bara, potol and aloo bhaja, and a very nice mixed vegetable. For non- vegetarians there was mutton as well.My husband loved the food. Something about the taste of vegetatbles, somehow they really taste very good. It never tastes that good when we make it at home:( We went for a walk in the evening. The Ganges flows very close to the village, it took us around half an hour to reach it. The walk was very rejuvinating, we walked through mango orchards. I did not realize there were so many varieties of mangoes in Malda alone, i knew there were many, I have grown up having varieties of mangoes, but the list is endless! Here is a list of mangoes available in Malda, this is certainly not exhaustive, there are many-many more types/varieties of mangoes that are available in Malda: Langra Gopalbhog Khirsapat Phojli Mis...

Nazirpur, Malda, West Bengal - A trip to my Ancestral home

Image
Our Ancentral house in Nazirpur, Malda This was one nostalgic trip for me. Most of our summer vacations, when we were at school, were spent in our ancestral home in a village by the name of Nazirpur in Malda,West Bengal. It used to be great fun! Meeting up cousins, chatting whole night long, getting spoilt by my grandmother, long walks to the mango orchards...Malda is best known for its mangoes, during summers, I remember surviving mostly on mangoes  (did not want to dilute that pleasure with any other substitute!) I have not been to the village in ages. After my grandmother passed away, there was no one to visit, and slowly our visits stopped. My father who feels the vacuum the most, visits now and then. But he is now getting on in years and can't make these trips that often. The house is no longer lived in and it now stands desolate, badly in need of repairs, and in need of love and care. (it is easily over hundred years!) We took an overnight train...

Tigers Galore at Kanha and Pench National Park, Madhya Pradesh, India

Image
Male tiger at Kanha National Park, India My sister, Soma, recently went for a trip to Kanha National Park and Pench in Madhyapradesh. And guess what...she sighted not one ...not two ...not even three...but seven tigers! She is so lucky, she sighted tigers in both the national parks she visited, Kanha and Pench. At Kancha National park, the chances of sighting a tiger is very high. Though in her case she spotted the maximum number of tigers in Pench! Soma tells me that she had given up any hopes of sighting a tiger, when all of a sudden, during one of her last safari trips (fifth safari), she sighted a male tiger in Kanha for over fifteen minutes! Kanha National Park is located in Madhya Pradesh. The nearest airport is at Jabalpur (175 km). Soma and her group flew to Nagpur from Kolkata, and then hired a transport to take her to Kancha. Kanha has a rich habitat of many otehr animals like the Sloth bear, leopard, striped hyena, spotted dear, wild boar, jungle cat, jackal and a va...
