Just About Everything

My journey through Turkey began, in a way, with a rainbow. Soon after arriving in Istanbul, I saw one stretching across the sky. Our taxi driver noticed how much I wanted to photograph it and stopped so that I could. Such a small gesture. Yet somehow, that moment stayed. There was so much more to come — Istanbul, the Bosphorus, Cappadocia, ancient streets, Turkish tea, cats seemingly at home everywhere, and a sky filled with balloons. And then there was Rumi. His words had spoken to me long before I travelled to Turkey, so encountering that connection during the journey brought something quieter and more personal to the experience. When I think of Turkey today, I remember its extraordinary places. But strangely, my mind often returns first to that rainbow. Perhaps some journeys remain with us not only because of what we saw, but because of what we felt while we were there. I wrote about this journey for  t2 . For years, Tibet had existed somewhere between a place I wanted to visit and a place I wasn't quite sure I would ever reach. Then one day, I was there. Travelling through Tibet was as much a part of the experience as reaching Everest Base Camp itself. The vastness of the landscape, the monasteries, the people we met and the long journey towards that unmistakable white peak all became part of one extraordinary memory. And, as travel so often reminds me, some of the moments I remember most weren't on the itinerary at all. They came through people, unexpected kindness and experiences we could never have planned.
